Day on the river, 2008

The Petaluma Small Craft Center Coalition (PSC3) celebrated its second annual Day On the River today. PSC3 is a group of clubs and individuals promoting the use of human-powered watercraft on the Petaluma River. To celebrate the Day On the River, member organizations offered rowing and paddling instruction and the opportunity to try an eight-oared rowing shell, a six-person outrigger canoe, and other human-powered watercraft including canoes, kayaks and traditional rowboats.

The sight of a canoe brings back fond memories of fun-filled days at summer camp when I was a boy. So when I saw a chance to paddle on the river, I jumped in it. I paddled from the Foundry Wharf to the Payran Street Bridge and back. I took these photos along the way. If you have never seen Petaluma from the river, you are missing a chance to see our town from a unique perspective.

Did you know that PSC3 hopes to build a boathouse that would be part of a small craft center on the Petaluma River? For more information about the plans, visit http://starbirdcreative.com/PSC3/

Thanks to all the members of the coalition and the Friends of the Petaluma River for providing the public with a chance to spend some time on the river!

Comment: Robert, thanks very much for giving Day on the River a plug and posting your photos! As an active member of Friends of the Petaluma River, I'm so psyched that you had a chance to get out on the water and had a good time doing it! There were A LOT of first timers out there today. Hopefully today's event and your plug here encourage them and others to explore the wonder of our river and watershed.
